4 Reasons To Power Wash Your Roof

Power washing is a crucial part of home maintenance. When most people think about power washing their homes, they tend to think about their siding, decks, patios, and driveways. While cleaning these parts of your home is certainly important, Best PowerWash Dallas wants to remind you not to forget about one crucial power washing location: the roof.

Here are four reasons why it is important to soft power wash your roof.

1. It's Standard Roof Maintenance
While your roofers may not have said anything about power washing, many shingle manufacturers encourage home owners to clean their roofs periodically. No shingles last forever, but cleaning your roof can help maximize the life expectancy of your shingles.

2. Algae & Moss Actually EAT Your Shingles
All mold, algae, and moss require sufficient nutrients in order to grow, but components of some shingles (asphalt shingles, especially) are actually a great source of said nutrients. In fact, continued mold growth on your roof can eat a hole right through your shingles! Given that mold is nature's way of breaking down organic materials, wood shingles are particularly at risk. It is estimated that algae and moss growth on your shingles can reduce their life expectancy by up to 40-50%.

3. Mold Growing On Your Roof Is One Step Away From Being Inside Your Home
Mold growing on your roof produces microscopic spores that can easily find their way into your home via the soffits and ridge vents. If these spores happen to land in a place with sufficient moisture and nutrients, they can quickly multiply into large colonies. Depending on your family's susceptibility, mold in your home can cause serious allergic reactions and/or health issues in your family - especially in those with preexisting respiratory illnesses.

4. Clean Roofs Can Lower Your Summer Energy Bill
Mold, algae, and moss growth on roofs typically appears as dark streaks. Because dark colors absorb more heat, having dark streaks on your roof can cause the temperature in your attic to rise by several degrees. This will cause your air conditioning unit to work double-time to keep temperatures down - and rack up a much higher energy bill in the process. It is also worth noting that increased heat can also cause your shingles to break down prematurely.

Conclusion (and Tips!)
While it's easy for your shingles to be out of sight, out of mind, the importance of keeping them mold- and algae-free cannot be overstated. Keep in mind that the ARMA (Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers Association) strongly recommends soft power washing and chemical cleaning for shingles (not high pressure washes). There are several reasons for this:

  • Using high pressure washes can potentially void the warranty on your shingles
  • High pressure washing decreases your shingles' life span
  • Pressure washing can remove mortar and break tiles
  • Pressure washing does not remove the roots of the mold or algae, which means that it can easily regrow if moisture is present

If you're considering power washing your roof in the near future, Best PowerWash Dallas is here to help you with your residential power wash. We never use damaging high pressure washes. Instead, we use a process called soft power washing and biodegradable cleaning chemicals to deliver a safe, effective clean.

All Your Questions About Mold Growth in Homes - Answered!

Mold can be a scary enemy to many homeowners. It seems to appear out of nowhere, without warning. It can cause severe aesthetic and structural (as well as financial) damage to your home. It can also pose serious health risks to the people in your home. With proper prevention and remediation techniques, however, home mold can become nothing more than a distant thought. Best PowerWash Dallas is here to help you protect your most valuable asset with answers to some of the commonly asked questions surrounding mold and mildew growth in homes.

Q: What causes mold growth?
A: Microscopic mold spores drift constantly through the air, invisible to the naked eye. If they land in the proper environment, they can quickly grow into large colonies. The "proper environment" can take a variety of different forms, as long as it has sufficient nutrients and moisture. Wood, carpet, wallpaper, and even dust often provide all the nutrients mold spores need. As long as there is sufficient moisture, then, mold can grow almost anywhere in the home.

Q: Is mold growth in homes dangerous?
A: Mold can cause mild to severe health problems in people, or none at all. Every person's reaction to mold is different. Mold spores are a common allergen, however, so individuals who are routinely affected by allergies, as well as those with chronic lung and/or respiratory disorders, are likely to experience health problems if mole spores are inhaled. Depending on the severity of their preexisting conditions, some of their reactions to mold growth can be very serious.

Q: Are there different types of home mold?
A: Yes, there are a few different types of home mold. A few common types include:
  • Alternaria
  • Aspergillus
  • Cladosporium
  • Penicillium
  • Fusarium
  • Stachybotrys Chartarum
  • Trichoderma

Q: Are some types of home mold more dangerous than others?
A: Some types of mold do tend to cause more severe reactions in people than others. Stachybotrys Chartarum (commonly known as "black mold") and Trichoderma often pose more serious health risks than other types of mold. While not inherently toxic themselves, these molds produce something called "mycotoxins" which can be extremely toxic if inhaled or absorbed through the skin.

Q: What is the best way to prevent mold growth?
A: Keeping your home bright, clean, and dry is the best way to prevent mold growth. Mold requires a significant amount of moisture to grow - without enough moisture, it cannot survive. Here are some simple tips to reduce moisture levels in your home:
  • Install a dehumidifier
  • Run the air conditioning during the summer
  • Turn on the bathroom ceiling fan or open a window while showering
  • Install vents to the outdoors in your crawlspace
  • Disinfect and dry all surfaces in your home, especially sinks and counter tops
  • Repair any plumbing leaks
  • Increase air flow in your home by turning on fans and/or opening windows

Q: How can existing mold populations be removed?
A: Depending on the severity of your mold population, different strategies can be used to clear your home of the mold growth. Minor growth on non-organic surfaces such as tile, metal, glass, concrete, and some counter tops can be cleaned with the proper disinfectant. However, organic surfaces such as drywall and wood require careful attention. In these cases, simply cleaning the surface may not be enough. You may have to consider removing the affected material entirely; mold can grow into the material (not just on the surface).

After disinfecting the affected surfaces, be sure to thoroughly dry the surfaces (and keep them dry in the future) to prevent the mold growth from returning. If you have a serious infestation or the mold is growing in areas you cannot access (such as the air ducts), you will probably want to hire a certified mold remediation expert to help you.

Home mold can be a serious problem if left unattended, but it can generally be removed relatively easily with the proper tools and techniques. If you notice the people in your home developing unusually strong allergic reactions or if you are able to visually recognize mold growth in your home, do not wait. The sooner you begin tackling the problem, the easier it will be to rid your home of unwanted mold growth. If you have questions about home mold or are looking for a mold removal expert in the Dallas suburbs, give us a call! Best PowerWash Dallas is the top mold removal expert in Frisco, McKinney, Plano, Carrollton, Lewisville, and Denton, Texas.

  • Fences
  • Sidewalks

House and Siding Power Washing

Did you know that residential power washing offers several different types of benefits? Cleaning the exterior of your home boosts your home's aesthetic appeal, protects your personal health, and saves you money!

Boosts Your Home's Aesthetic Appeal
Dirt, mold, algae, and pollen can pile up on the surface of your home gradually, so you may not notice it at first. After time, however, these natural substances can cause your home to look dingy, shabby, and unkempt. Return your home to its natural shine by giving it a much-needed residential power wash.

Protects Your Personal Health
Mold and algae can cause moderate to severe allergic reactions in many people - especially those with asthma and other preexisting respiratory disorders. Giving your home a thorough exterior cleaning can wash away these harmful allergens.

Saves You Money
If not removed, mold, algae, dirt, and other natural substances can eventually cause damage to the surfaces underneath them. These potentially costly repairs can be easily avoided with periodic power washing.

Deck and Fence Power Washing

Did you know that decks, fences, and other similar surfaces can be severely damaged by the traditional high power washes? High pressure washes can damage caulking, break apart mortar, and splinter wood. Damages to any of these types of surfaces (and even vinyl siding) can make home susceptible to leaks.

At Best PowerWash Dallas, we clean and protect your exterior surfaces with our special 250° steam pressure wash. Combined with our safe, biodegradable detergents, this unique approach cleans your exterior surface while maintaining its structural integrity.

Roof Power Washing

Those black streaks you've noticed on your roof are more than an eyesore - they're a structural threat. Did you know that some components of asphalt shingles are actually a common food source for certain species of algae and mold, primarily Gloeocapsa Magma? If not removed, this algae can actually eat a hole straight through your shingles! Wooden shingles are especially susceptible to this type of damage. If not properly removed, algae and mold growth can be responsible for reducing the lifespan of roofs by by an estimated 40-50%

Dark colors absorb more heat than light colors, so having dark mold on your roof can also raise the temperature in your attic. Thus, keeping your roof clean of unwanted mold growth not only protects the life expectancy of your roof - it can also keep your energy costs down during the summer months.

Like decks and fences, roofs are extremely susceptible to damage from high pressure washes. Roofs should only be cleaned via soft power washing with appropriate chemicals. Consider this a friendly reminder not to let anyone with a high pressure washer come near your roof.
